Wimbledon: Day Two

Heather Watson defeats Ajla Tomljanovic in Wimbledon round one

Heather Watson moved into the second round of Wimbledon as she defeated Croatia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets on Tuesday at The All England Club.

In a first time meeting, Watson came past the world No.53 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour to set up a second round meeting with either German ninth seed Angelique Kerber or Poland’s Urszula Radwanska.

World No.60 Watson broke the Croatian only once in the opening set on Court 3, winning more than 43% of points on her opponent's serve with good anticipation and movement.

In the opening of the second set, 22 year-old Watson took the lead by sealing the early break as Tomljanovic smacked her forehand long. The British No.1 then went on to secure another break of serve to take the second set 6-2.

"Yeah, it's a very tough match." Watson said. "She's climbed the rankings very quickly after being out of tennis with mono glandular fever, as well, and it was tough. She hits a hard ball, hard heavy ball, and has a big serve. A lot of those games, I didn't even get close. But the games I did I took advantage."

Tara Moore v Vera Zvonareva: Play suspended

Play has been suspended between Tara Moore and Vera Zvonareva at one set a piece due to fading light on Tuesday evening.

Russian Zvonareva had taken the opening set 6-4 on Court 2, before the British wild card fought back to win the second set on a tie-break 7-6(3).

Play will resume on Wednesday.

Dan Smethurst edged by John Isner

Dan Smethurst was edged out of his Wimbledon debut in straight sets by big serving American John Isner on day two at The All England Club.

Smethurst, who only hit 18 unforced errors throughout the match, was beaten 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

In the opening set Smethurst, who was making both his Wimbledon and Tour-level debut, moved the tall American around the court well. The British wild card failed to capitalise on three opportunities to break, and in the 11th game, it was the world No.11 who broke through after a double fault from the Briton, taking the set 7-5.

Smethurst, who has improved his ATP ranking from No.396 at the end of 2013 to a career-high No.234 this week, played one poor game in the second set, seeing the 29 year-old take the second set 6-3 with one break of serve.

The third set followed a similar trend, and it was Isner who took the match.

"I didn't realize the crowd would get into it so much." Smethurst commented. "I was overwhelmed by that. I've never had a crowd backing me like that before. That was a great experience."

Smethurst’s Wimbledon is not over yet however, as he has also received a wild card into the men’s doubles event alongside Briton Edward Corrie.

Maria Sharapova powers past Sam Murray

Sam Murray faced tough opposition in her round one match at SW19 as she took on former champion and world No.5 Maria Sharapova on the No.1 Court.

World No.247 Murray struggled to stay in the points as the Russian player powered her way to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

"It was a great experience." Murray explained. "I've been on the court only before as a fan. It was nice to go out. I think I settled quite well at the beginning. I really enjoyed playing on a court like that."
