The HSBC Road To Wimbledon 14 & Under National Finals 15th-20th August

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

James Davis of Kent & Piers Foley of Berkshire became the HSBC Road to Wimbledon doubles champions playing phenomenal lawn tennis. James Davis was also the boys’ singles runner-up earlier in the day, at The HSBC Road To Wimbledon.

128 of the top boys and girls have been playing all week just around the corner from the scene of Andy Murray’s triumph over Roger Federer to win the London 2012 tennis Gold Medal, playing on the Wimbledon qualifier courts at The Bank of England Sports Centre.

This year HSBC Road To Wimbledon is running just after London 2012. HSBC Road to Wimbledon has been inspiring a generation for over a decade, this being the eleventh national finals giving the opportunity of a lifetime to 128 British school children to experience tennis at Wimbledon.

To reach the national finals players had to first compete in one of over 800 local club or school events, then qualify via the County Finals. Piers Foley reached the National Finals as number one seed as a result of his impressive summer tournaments results and was invited by The All England Club Lawn Tennis Club, and HSBC, to experience a fun-filled week of tennis.

During the National Finals players compete in the singles & doubles events experiencing the magic of the most famous grass courts in the world.

Olympic silver medallist Tim Henman, Ambassador for the HSBC Road to Wimbledon 14 and Under National Challenge will be in attendance during the Finals and says,

“The HSBC Road to Wimbledon is a wonderful way to inspire future generations of British tennis talent.  As it celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, it is hugely apparent that competitions like these are a fantastic way to help nurture British tennis.”

He adds, “I will always remember the first time that I played at Wimbledon and I look forward to sharing this experience with this year’s finalists. It is a great pleasure to be able to help the The All England Club and HSBC support the stars of the future.”

Giles Morgan, Group Head of Sponsorship for HSBC talks also talks about sponsoring the prestigious junior tennis tournament,

“Enjoying its tenth anniversary, The HSBC Road To Wimbledon is another example of how HSBC is supporting sport at all levels, from grassroots to elite, and if we can play a small part in the sporting development of these young players then we’ll be happy. We are delighted to give our support to what has become a much anticipated fixture in the junior tennis calendar”
