Following an impressive run of form throughout the Winter, Maidenhead tennis talent Gregor Webster, 10, was invited to attend the prestigious Winter National Tour Finals with the top 16 boys in the country vying for the national championship title. The tournament is held over 2 days at the National Tennis Centre, in Roehampton, Lawn Tennis Association’s headquarters in London. The invitation-only tournament is the pinnacle of the winter British tennis season and showcases the talent of some of the best young players in the country.
Gregor Webster, of Maidenhead Lawn Tennis Club, was seeded no 2 but stormed to victory, never dropping a set and only conceding 5 games during the whole tournament.
He played regional camp and squad mate Joshua Stokes of Suffolk in the final. Joshua had knocked out the no 1 seed in an exciting battle but was not able to maintain his momentum with Gregor on the attack and managing to hold his nerve with the title in his sights. He only losing one game as he secured his first National Championship title.
Gregor’s coach, Jessica Bull was there to support him and said afterwards
‘Gregor has had an outstanding weekend of tennis. He has worked extremely hard in training as well as his tournaments to get to this stage and this is a fantastic way to finish the season.’
