Berkshire 14U Youngsters get valuable experience
At the recent 14U County Cup week-end at Sutton Surrey both girls & boys teams performed well in the team environment-so different from the usual type of individual tennis competitions.
Both of our number ones proved great examples for the younger players –Sophie Drakeford-Lewis (Bisham WIN tennis) and Piers Foley (The Royal Berks) winning all 3 of their singles matches. The girls beat Devon but lost to Surrey & Sussex.
Pride of place however went to the boys who beat the Country’s reigning Champions, Surrey despite vociferous support for the home team with a tie-break 10/6 when Lewis Brown (Maidenhead) finished off 6 consecutive points!
After this there was an easy win against Avon followed by the key match against Sussex between the No.2s when Luke Purser (Bisham/WIN tennis) played an old adversary Jack Burkill. This lasted over 3 hours with Burkill winning 7/5 in the final set to give Sussex a 4/2 victory.
With 3 teams winning 2 matches a count back on sets meant that Surrey despite losing to Berkshire on the Saturday will go through to the Finals played a few weeks later.
