The President of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) Peter Bretherton visited Berkshire last weekend to applaud tennis clubs and coaches in the area for their commitment to the development of tennis in the region.
On his trip Peter was invited, alongside Mayor of Wokingham Borough Council, Bob Wyatt, to officially open the new facilities at Shinfield Tennis Club which include four new floodlit courts and a clubhouse. Funding for this development was supported by the LTA, Sport England – Inspired Facilities, Shinfield Parish Council and Wokingham Borough Council.
Shinfield Tennis Club is Clubmark accredited - a Sport England accreditation programme that recognises clubs who are delivering quality tennis programmes in line with best practice – and its membership has reached more than 220 and continues to grow. The club also boasts more than 100 juniors on the coaching programme thanks to the numerous school and community links that are in place.
The visit, organised by Berkshire Lawn Tennis Association, demonstrated how the county’s clubs are offering opportunities to play to all members of the community.
Peter Bretherton’s first stop on Sunday 30th September was Wokingham Tennis Club after which he headed to Shinfield for their official opening and then on to his final stop of the day at Windsor Tennis Club.
Jo-Anne Downing, the LTA’s Tennis Development Manager for Berkshire, said: “We were really looking forward to the LTA President’s visit this weekend. It provided Peter a chance to see the progress being made by Berkshire clubs which have had LTA investment and support.”
