Hale LTC Celebrates its Centenary Tournament

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

It was in this way that Hale Lawn Tennis Club kicked off a day of celebration, marking its 100th Club Tournament. The question on everyone’s lips was: would the future champions triumph? Would topspin, blue and pink tops, and high-fives win over years of experience, slice backhands and delicate drops-hots? Well, the Future Champions won and learned some court-craft into the bargain!

Next up on “Centre Court” was an exhibition match involving Hale’s very own Samantha Murray. Samantha had just been given a Wild Card entry into Wimbledon’s main singles draw - creating huge excitement for the Club, where her whole family are active members. In fact, she agreed to take on her own brother (Pete Murray) and another top male, Ross Mackenzie. Another age-old question was about to be answered; could the 7th placed British female player beat men ranked over 2000 places below her? To save any embarrassment for the men, we won’t report the result here!

Just before the main finals took to court, there was a Parade of Champions. Winners from the 60’s though to the present day took to “Centre Court”, highlighting Hale’s long history, including Cathy Godfrey who made it to the third round of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

The finals lived up to the occasion. Referee, Dominic James, noted that there were a record number of individuals taking part in the finals - from aged 12 through to 79. What a fantastic and inspiring end to a truly memorable week of tennis.
