The first round was a round robin for both the boys and the girls. The winners and runners up from the boys went into a compass draw with the winners of the draw taking the Monkhouse Shield. The other teams went into a second round robin as a plate event. After the first round, the girls went into 2 round robin groups depending on where they had finished , with the higher placed teams competing for the Monkhouse Shield and the others competing in a plate event.
All the courts were busy from 10 in the morning to 6 in the evening with spectators enjoying the beautiful weather. The competitors and spectators were supplied with refreshments by June Bowyer and her team. They were also able to view a range of tennis clothing brought by sponsors Monkhouse.
Hoole boys played well after an initial wobble in the round robin phase to beat Congleton in the semi-final. In the final Hoole retained the Shield by defeating Prenton who had beaten Neston in their semi-final. Penketh won the plate and Prestbury were the runners up.
Bramhall Lane also retained their title to beat Birchwood into second place to win the girls Monkhouse Shield. A joint team of girls from Cuddington and Congleton were 3rd and Hoole girls were 4th. Ellesmere Port City won the girls plate with Thorndale girls in second place.
Thanks to Congleton for allowing the Club to be used. So with more entries and all the teams playing tennis all day, the new format was judged to have done what was asked of it, although it has to be said the weather played its part in making the day successful.
