On a very sunny Sunday 15th March, Truro LTC welcomed four Penzance juniors to compete in the AEGON 14 & U Team League. For some players from both teams, it was a new experience to compete in this team league. Play started at 10am with all four singles matches getting off to a great start.
The first win went to Truro with a convincing 4–0 4–0 win to Duncan Covey over Josh from Penzance. Truro’s second win was a tighter affair with Kieran Trewhella overcoming Luke Mckinnel 4–2 4–0. Penzance’s first win came when Stan beat Aran . Aran had a 3–0 lead in the first set until Stan found his feet, taking the match 5–3 4–0. Both players played very well in this, their first AEGON match. The fourth singles match between Ben Vulliamy from Truro and Freddie Stone from Penzance was very closely fought. The first set went to Penzance 4–1, with some consistent play from Freddie. Then Ben found his form with many superb winners leading to a 4–1 win to Truro in the second set. The players and parents all enjoyed a thrilling final set tiebreak which Freddie eventually won 10–6.
In the doubles, Luke and Stan from Penzance beat Kieran and Aran from Truro 4–2 4–0. Truro’s Duncan and Ben then levelled the total score with a solid 4–0 4–2 win against Freddie and Josh.
After all singles and doubles matches had been played, both teams had six points each. What then followed was a nail biting tiebreak shootout! The new partnership of Freddie and Luke from Penzance took the deciding tiebreak to a 10–7 win over Duncan and Ben from Truro.
Penzance was the overall winner with some great tennis played and excellent sportsmanship shown all round. Thank you to Penzance for coming to play at Truro and for sharing some food and drinks with us to end a fabulous day.
