Truro's Kieran Roskell-Thomas is celebrating after returning victorious from the national HSBC Road to Wimbledon Finals held recently at the home of the world's finest grass court tennis tournament.
Kieran won his final 7-5, 6-3 against Niklas Stingl of Scotland. Early nerves from both players were quickly overcome and a close first set of high quality tennis was edged by Kieran when he broke serve to go 6-5 ahead and then held his own serve for the first set. The second set featured several close games and long rallies and was again decided by just the one break of serve, with Kieran prevailing 6-3.
Their had been a tough start to the week as Kieran lost a couple of close matches in the group stage on the tie break and was placed in the second group of players to contest the consolation event.Winning five straight matches Kieran beat Jay Skelcher-Maxwell (Isle of Man) 6-0,6-0; Henri Morland (Durham) 6-4, 6-1; Sebastian Harris (Berkshire) 6-1, 7-6; and in the semi final Finnbarr Adams (Shropshire) 6-7, 6-1, 11-9, before beating Niklas Stingl (Scotland) 7-5, 6-3 in the final.
Kieran said of his victory "Playing at Wimbledon is a dream come true and to win an event is fantastic, the highlight of my career so far. It was also great to be presented with my trophy by Tim Henman"
Kieran is a member of Truro Tennis Club and is coached by Tim Webster of the Leverton-Williams Tennis Academy who said " Kieran has worked hard at his tennis and I am delighted for him. I hope this will be a big confidence boost and he can keep on progressing"
