The LTA have launched, Aegon U9 County Cup. This new event will bring the best 4 players from 9 counties together, to compete in a team format consisting of Singles and Doubles. The event is timed creating a great competitive environment for all.
The Cornwall team consisting of players from Penzance Tennis Club, Arielle Fitkin and Caitlin Barton Sergeant and Heron Tennis Centre, Elliot Riley and Max Cameron Webb.
The County Cup was held at Bath University on the outside courts, but with a bad weather forecast the players were soon transferred to the indoor courts.
Cornwall were competing against Hampshire and Wiltshire. Hampshire were odds on favourites for the title, so the Cornwall team were ready for a battle!
The team took on Wiltshire first! Arielle played consistent with great hitting from the baseline to secure our first points. Elliott battled hard against Wiltshire's No1 and with good composure and excellent serving Elliott won, increasing Cornwall’s points total. The 2nd round matches saw both Caitlin and Max following the winning path with some great power and determination
The battle commenced against Hampshire with good competitive spirit, the team were up for the challenge. Arielle took on Thandwe Mlambo a National Talent id player, Arielle lost but was very happy with her result, as she gained more points than their last encounter. Caitlin was to play another Caitlin and after a sudden death point set won her 2nd match. Elliot played strongly, Max played courageously, but both boys lost their 2nd matches.
After a great first day, the team finished 2nd in their box and finished 5th overall.
The overall winners were Hampshire with Runners Up Dorset.
