On Friday the 22nd of June, the County tennis finals of the Cornwall Schools Games were played at Newquay's Heron Tennis Centre.
Following the opening ceremony for all the sports teams at Newquay Tretherras School, the 20 primary and secondary school teams walked down to the Heron Tennis Centre for the singles events.
The tennis competitions, organised by Cornwall Sports Partnerships, were the climax to the qualifying events held around Cornwall.
Baked in sunshine, the primary schools competition was run by the LTA's Georgina Loosemore and her team of officials and Leaders, who were from secondary schools accross the county and helped the young players with scoring. The event was contested between the 36 best Year 3 and 4 players from Mylor Bridge, Penpol, Jacobstow, St Petrocs, St Nicholas Downderry, Truro Prep and Goonhavern. Truro Prep finished in gold medal postion, St Petrocs in silver position and Penpol in bronze position.
Alongside the youngest players, some of Cornwall's finest Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 players competed in the day long finals.
The Years 7 and 8, and Years 9 and 10 events were organised by Matthew Trudgeon, who is Heron and Ace Academy's Head Professional. There were 81 boys and girl competitors from 12 schools: Tretherras, Treviglas, Penair, Truro, Mounts Bay, Bodmin, Torpoint, Cape Cornwall, Humphrey Davy, Callington, St Ives and Wadebridge.
The gold medal winners of the Years 7 and 8 boys were Tretherras with Oshi Leverton (LevertonWilliams Tennis) beating Tad Mclean (Heron Tennis Centre) in the final. Bodmin college were victorious in the girls event with Nadia Rawson (LevertonWilliams Tennis) beating Arielle Fitkin (LevertonWilliams Tennis).
In gold medal position for the Years 9 and 10 boys were Tretherras with Finn Leverton (LevertonWilliams Tennis) beating Liam Manning (Heron Tennis Centre) and for the girls the winners were Truro School with Alisa Cole (LevertonWilliams Tennis) beating Amy Johns (LevertonWilliams Tennis & Penzance Tennis Club).
