Now into its eighth year, the Start & Co sponsored Newquay-Heron Open event is still growing and becoming a key feature in the tennis calendar.
With close to 300 players from all over the Country descending on the courts at Heron Tennis for this year’s championships, the organisers knew they were in for a busy week and were anxiously hoping for good weather too. Well the weather certainly cooperated with only a few hours being lost to rain on one day, but even this didn’t prevent matches being played through till 10.00pm on a couple of evenings and players needing to play matches on the courts at the Headland Hotel as well. Thank you to the Headland Hotel for their help and support.
Throughout the week the courts and clubhouse were packed and the sheer amount of quality tennis on display was a treat to see and with so many players contesting the finals in lovely sunshine the tournament was brought to a super conclusion.
The efforts made by so many players to travel down to Cornwall is greatly appreciated by the organisers, but it is also very nice to see that our Cornwall players are able to compete and win against some of these super players.
The most notable local successes are listed below:
Daniel Elston from St Austell who won the men’s singles without dropping a set and then teamed up with Alex Richards, also from St Austell, to take the men’s doubles in a closely contested three setter against top Heron club pair, Rhys Ellis Davies and the much-improved Scott Sutherland.. Also doing the double was Alisa Cole of LevertonWilliams Tennis, winning the girls 14’s singles against Amy Johns of Penzance and then teaming up with Amy to win the girls doubles. Amy’s also did well in winning the14’s mixed doubles with Newquay's Finn Leverton. Another popular winner was India Rojano of LevertonWilliams Tennis who won the girls 16’s singles. It’s fair to say that India has not always been winning and this result is a credit to all the hard work that India and her coaches have put in and a mark of her great improvement. There was success for Heron players and something for the home crowd to cheer with Lauren Norton & Rhys Ellis-Davies winning the mixed doubles.
Finally a huge thank you goes to all the players, parents, sponsors, Sue the referee and everyone involved in helping this tournament to be such a big success. …and after such a busy week, it’s still all systems go with the Heron programme of coaching and social tennis returning to normal. Players of all ages and levels are really welcome and if you think you might like to have a go, just call 01637 877 555 or pop in and see us. Heron is a friendly place and you would be very welcome. You don’t need to have equipment or have played before. Simply come along and we can help you to enjoy this lovely sport.
