Heron hosts special Olympics event

Tuesday, March 04, 2014

There was a busy weekend of tennis activity this week at Heron Tennis with the Club hosting the first ever sports session for the Cornwall Special Olympics Club and then a busy competition for young players taking place on the Sunday.

The Special Olympics Club for Cornwall (SOC) has been set-up to provide people with any sort of learning disability/mental health issues, and their family members, to enjoy a wide range of sporting opportunities and to become a part of the Special Olympics programme.

It will also provide a means of directing people with any sort of disability to the clubs and venues in Cornwall that are offering good quality sporting opportunities and environments.

To celebrate the launch of the SOC  there was a cake-cutting ceremony and this was performed by guest of honour Robbie Hampshaw from Newquay,  who did brilliantly well winning Gold and Silver medals in tennis at last year’s Special Olympics.

The Special Olympics club has been brought together by Steve Hillman, Cornwall’s inclusion Officer, and Steve was delighted to see over 60 players taking part on the day experiencing tennis, golf, badminton, bowls and bochia.

Heron Tennis in Newquay, and an increasing number of venues around the county, are providing welcoming and friendly tennis programme for adults and juniors with any sort of physical/learning disability and are always looking for new players to join in. If you would like further information, please contact Paul Roberts on 01637 877 555.

For further information on the Special Olympics Club and accessing disability sport in Cornwall, please contact Steve Hillman on 07837 311539.
