Heron Spring Bank Tournamnet 2009

Friday, June 19, 2009

The Heron Tennis Centre in Trenance Park, Newquay recently held their 6th Annual Open Tennis Championships. The tournament has gone from strength to strength over the years with many players traveling from out of County to take part and this year there was a record entry of 180 players.

The exciting news ahead of this year’s event was the award of Grade 3 Status for the tournament by the Lawn Tennis Association. Grade 3 status means that the tournament carried more ranking points and could therefore attract some of the best players in the Country. It is a real credit to the club and the organizers for a relatively new tournament to be awarded a grade 3 and further recognition of the great staff, facilities and tennis programme that Newquay enjoys at Heron.

With so many strong and experienced players traveling from all over the Country to compete it made things tougher for our local players, but there were many notable performances by Heron players.

A full list of results follows below, but we would like to give special mention to the following local players:

Dan Ogden for reaching the semi-finals in the boys under 12’s, before losing to the eventual champion in an extremely close fought high-quality match. In fact Dan was the only player to provide winner James Mitchell with a serious challenge, so well done to Dan.

16 year old Claire Tressider, who bases her training at Heron, scored a fantastic double success in taking the Ladies Open title and the Girls 17 & Under title. Claire has recently put in a lot of work with Heron Coaches Steve Askey and Matt Trudgeon and these 2 titles were a well deserved reward for everyone’s efforts.

Not to be outdone by his students, Steve Askey also managed to roll back the years by going on to claim the men’s open title. Reaching the final hadn’t been all plain sailing as Steve had to battle back brilliantly from a set down, and then from a break down in the deciding set of his semi-final. This match helped Steve sharpen up his game and mental toughness ahead of the final, which was good news as he was taking on the younger and higher-ranked leftie, Adam Heyward. With strong swirling winds and both players determined to win the large crowd was enthralled as both players coped with the conditions to provide 2 sets of excellent quality. In both sets, Steve managed to stay focused and produce some of his best tennis at the key moments winning in 2 close tie-break sets.

Another local success story was Max Cameron Webb and Elliott Riley reaching the final of the Boys 9 & under event. Both these boys, and a quite a few others at Heron, are showing great promise and we all look forward to seeing them enjoy their progress up the tennis ladder.

Finally a great big thank you to Tournament Referee Sue Eames for the fantastic job she did, to all the Heron staff and Catering team and all of the sponsors who helped this years tournament to be even more successful than we had hoped.
