Callington Community College was the venue for the 2013 Callington Primary School Tennis Tournament. This fantastic event was part of the School Sports Partnership’s Key Stage 2 Primary School Games with the winner moving forward to represent the area at the Cornwall School Games in June.
The event, which was held at the Callington tennis dome, saw 6 different local schools take part with 36 budding tennis players taking to the courts. The schools were split into 2 groups and played a round-robin format. The winner of each group would go through to what proved to be a hotly contested final.
Group A consisted of St Mellion A, St Dominic A, Sir Robert Geffery’s and Callington B. The group was closely fought throughout with some stunning tennis played. Eventually St Mellion A just prevailed to beat Sir Robert Geffery’s into second place. This meant they would move through to the final.
Group B had teams from Trenode and St Nicolas, as well as Callington A, St Dominick B and St Mellion B. The teams again played some tight matches and thanks to a terrific final match where their team won all four matches; St Nicolas proved worthy winners and pushed Callington A into second place.
This left a final between St Mellion A and St Nicolas. Both teams put in lots of work and played their hearts out. After a tense 4 matches the deserved winners proved to be St Nicolas who won by a combined points score of 36 – 19. They now progress through to the Cornwall School Games in June.
The event was overseen and run by Tennis Mad and some wonderful sports leaders from both Callington and Saltash Community Colleges’. Tennis Mad’s lead coach for the day Alex Robinson said “the children all played with fantastic spirit and fair play throughout the day. It was great to see so many young players take to the court and most of all have fun!”
All players were invited by Tennis Mad to get involved with the local tennis clubs and hopefully we will see some of these young stars on a court again soon. Last thing to say is congratulations to all that took part and a huge good luck to the fantastic four from St Nicolas at the School Games!
