Heron's Inaugural Primary Schools Tennis Skills & Team Games Event

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

The event, which is hoped to become an annual fixture in Heron's School Tennis programme, saw St Columb Major, Polwhele House, Newquay Junior, Roche Community and Trenance Infants Schools visit Heron for a trailblazing afternoon's tennis! These schools, who have all had us provide our coaching services to their pupils recently, were invited to bring mixed teams of 8 players to compete in this new event.  The afternoon was designed to allow players to compete in friendly challenges, which consisted of hitting shots into goals, throwing into hoops and firing balls in 'Keep Your Bedrooms Tidy'!

Steven Askey, Heron's Director of Coaching and organiser of the afternoon, said: "We are so pleased that so many young children had an opportunity to play in a team and represent their school in an event that had a large emphasis on skills and fun, rather than just matches as in the past."

Thanks to the 56 children who came along and to the teachers who brought them. Thanks also to Tretherras' Tennis Leaders, Jack Bright, Elliot Moses and Jack Williams and to our coaches, who made the afternoon such a success, helping bring the fun of tennis to youngsters new to our sport!

*Our Primary School Games, which is on May 22 at Heron, targets the best players from Newquay's network of schools when they compete in doubles matches against each other.
