Eight of the area's best 9 year olds recently competed in the next stage of the Flybe Mini Tennis Circuit. High winds led the orange ball event to be moved into Heron's dome. Players of this age compete on slightly smaller courts than the full size ones and use lower compression, orange coloured balls, which aids their development.
There were good wins for Toby Watts from Barnstaple over Margot Slade from Plymouth and Truro's Harry Melville over Pierce Ford. Heron's Isabel Rix made her debut in this age group and recorded her first win versus Penzance's Ellie Boase.
The final saw Harry Melville record a three set win versus Toby Watts. Some high quality tennis was played before Harry edged it 7-4, 1-7, 7-5, which meant there were only 2 points in the final set tie-break between the two players.
The finalists were presented with Heron t-shirts and Harry received his winner's medal. The other competitors had to settle for chocolates!!
Thanks to all the players and parents for attended. The next Flybe Mini Tennis event to be held at Heron is Saturday 24 May for 8 & Under players and then Saturday 28 June for the next orange ball event for 9 year olds.
