Heron start the trend for adult competition

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Sunday 13 November saw the first ever adult 1day Grade 5 singles competition in Cornwall,  held at the Heron Tennis Centre, Newquay.  1 day LTA Sanctioned Events for juniors are common throughout Cornwall and other counties, whereas similar events for adults have been lacking, therefore we were very pleased to be starting what hopefully will be a trend throughout the county.

The event attracted 8 competitors from Heron and other clubs, desperate to improve their singles play and compete against other like-minded players. Some were motivated by the desire to develop their game, others were motivated by the determination to win and in doing so improve their LTA rating.

The event was held both indoors in Heron’s dome and on the outside courts. Conditions outside were dry but windy, the swirling winds making play very difficult. It truly was a case of who moved and danced the best and who watched the ball the closest won, when on the outside courts.

The quarter finals commenced after all players and people in Heron’s Courtside Café observed the 2 minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday. Following sign-in and players receiving their complimentary jelly babies and energy drinks, the quarter final line up saw, Tim Marter beat Nick Jones after Tim craftily exposed Nick’s weaker back-hand.  Paul Rees conceeding his match to Will Dixon in the second set after winning the first despite his knee injury and Jack Bright’s upset of John Camacho.  Liam Manning was given a bye after his opponent withdrew before the event.

Tim Marter beat his older, more experienced opponent Will Dixon 6-2 7-5 to progress to the final.  Liam Manning beat Jack Bright in the other semi final 6-2 6-2 in a closely contested match.

In the final, it was Liam Manning who took the prize after beating Tim 6-2 6-3 to seal a memorable day for the teenager. Liam, a member of Heron’s Ace Academy, was competing in his first event since his hamstring injury.

In the plate event, John Camacho took out Nick Jones without dropping a game in a match that was contested closely despite the scoreline.

Well done to all the competitors for their efforts and congratulations go to Liam Manning!

The next 1day Grade 5 Aadult Event is on February 12 next year. The event is open to men and teenagers who are interested in playing competitive singles matches.
