In what was a fantastic end to a wonderful series of Tennis competitions Workington’s Oscar Pickering and Carlisle’s Isla Charnock emerged victorious from the Mini Red Grand Finals.
The fantastically appointed Workington Sports Centre played host to the finals and the Tennis on display was fitting for such a great venue as match after match was fought to the very end.
With Isla showing the form that had seen her win all five lead up events Oscar was playing similarly well but a very strong field meant that he would have to pull out all the stops if he was to match his performance in taking home the leaderboard trophy. Such was the depth of good players some winners from the lead up events could only make the consolation event as Carlisle’s William Tromans and the Ashfield School trio of Matthew Jackson, Toby Ackerley and Oscar all made the semi-finals. On the girls side it was Maryport’s Lucy-Jo Rowley and Isla catching the eye as they made the final and they were joined by Oscar and Toby after narrow wins over William and Matthew respectively.
With the excitement building the stage was set for the finals, consolation final and third place final with Isla beating Lucy-Jo, Oscar pipping Toby, Liam White beating Joshua Rutter and Matthew outlasting William.

“I always try to make the finals that little bit more special and we were delighted to have Cumbria LTA representatives in the shape of Joy and Mike Robinson and Coach Tracey Burrus in attendance today”. “We also had a great team of Umpires who have helped throughout the tour and we also invited last year’s champion Vincent Lofgren back to help present the trophies”. “The Cumbria Community Foundation and Ashfield Tennis Club funded events are so important in the grass roots development of Tennis players within Cumbria as it gives them such a great stepping stone and pathway in their fledgling Tennis careers, it was a great day all round”.
The day was capped off with a fun doubles competition which was won by Archie Agnew and Isla Charnock.
