On the hottest early May bank holiday weekend for years, our 14U boys and girls teams travelled away to compete in the Inter County Cup.
The boys journeyed to Harlow in Essex where they were facing the South East's strong Kent team, Cambridgeshire, Northumberland and Essex. Hit by late withdrawals through injury, our boys were still up for the challenge!
Beating Cambridgeshire and Northumberland 5-1 left Essex and Kent as the big, deciding matches!. In an amazing battle of grit and determination the boys pulled off a terrific win against Kent! Tied at 3-3 a match deciding tie-break had to be played which Devon won 10-7!
The team went in to the final day top of the group with Essex left to burst the bubble. Another seesawing tie left them in the same position, tied 3-3 and another match deciding tie-break to play but this time Essex was too strong. Essex had beaten Kent on the Sunday so now everything hung on Kent's last 4 doubles matches which they had to win to overtake Devon and win the group. This they did, beating Devon by 1 rubber.
Team Coach, Liam Storey said, "The team atmosphere was brilliant over the whole weekend. I just want to say thank you to John Cooksley who did a fantastic job as assistant coach in preparing players for matches, supporting players and going on court at the change of ends to help the players in their matches. I am extremely proud of the boys. They all busted a gut and showed real determination and Devon are right up there nationally in county tennis in this age group! To beat Kent is a great victory! Come on Devon!! Next Year!!"
