14U Cup - great teamwork from the girls

Monday, May 14, 2018

As it was set to be a warm and sunny weekend, the girls were all eager and excited to get on court and play some matches. After a good training session at Exeter Tennis Centre we set off for what was to be a tough first couple of days. On the Saturday we faced Wiltshire followed by Somerset on the Sunday, both very strong teams with some top players. Despite the girls’ hard fought efforts, we lost our first two fixtures, narrowly losing out on some nail biting matches. Shout out to Jessica Hill, who grinded a total of 6 hours of singles on the Sunday, involving two tight 3 set matches, battling not only a tough opposition but the heat and fatigue. She wasn’t going to give up without a fight and battled hard to the very last point making the most of her last ever 14U county cup appearance.

Regardless, spirits remained high from the team and everyone was pumped up, as they were determined to finish with a big win on the last day. With great performances and energy from the girls, we started the day strongly with Jess Johnson and Darcie bringing home the first two wins. Next up was Grace who had a tough match at 2 and lost 10-7 in the champ tiebreak. We went into the doubles 3:1 up and the girls stormed to a 5:1 victory with the two Jess’s winning at 1 and Margaux and Darcie at 2. Good way to end a weekend of high level tennis.

It was great to see some young new additions to the team which included Jess Johnson, Margaux Slade and Darcie Morton. All of which got their first wins for the 14U girls County Cup Team. The Devon girls displayed a true team spirit by supporting and motivating each other over the weekend. Most importantly, they continuously managed to remain positive and up beat despite some tough situations. Well done girls for a great weekend of tennis and car rides “singing” concert.
