The team of Joel While (Torquay), Adam Cotgrove (Exeter), Matyas Metyko (Ivybridge) and Bradley Philips (Barnstaple) suffered a 6-2 defeat against Cornwall, but recovered to beat Somerset 8-0 to finish as group runners up and qualify for the semi-finals on day two.
Devon trailed 2-1 after the singles against Cornwall following a polished performance from Cotgrove who defeated Kieran Roskell-Thomas 4-1, 4-0. This was the first of four wins for Cotgrove who remained unbeaten at singles all weekend. However, team mates While and Metyko both lost 4-1, 5-3, against the highly-rated Oshi Leverton and Charlie Standen respectively.
While and Cotgrove made their debut partnership against Leverton and Roskell-Thomas, losing 4-1, 4-2 to leave Devon needing a win against Somerset.
Metyko and Cotgrove saw Devon off to a flying start with wins against Jonathan Barber and Tristan Coore 5-3, 4-0 and 4-0, 4-1. While followed suit with an impressive 4-0, 4-1 victory over Edward Shattock to seal the tie. Metyko and Philips then put in a clinical display to win the doubles 4-0, 4-0 and seal Devon’s qualification.
Devon faced pre-event favourites Avon on day two and found themselves 2-1 down after the singles with While putting up a good fight when going down 4-1, 4-2 to Declan Moran, one of the top players in the country. Cotgrove had a 4-0 4-1 win over James McCall to level it up, but Metyko struggled to get going against the solid Aydan Caglayan and lost 4-0, 4-1.
While and Cotgrove had their chances in the doubles, but let slip a second set 3-0 lead to go down 4-0, 5-3.
Devon then faced Cornwall again in the third place play off and reversed the day one result to win 6-2. Philips fought well to beat old foe Max Cameron-Webb 4-2, 1-4, 10-3 and Cotgrove came through a gruelling encounter against Standen 4-2, 5-3, recovering from 3-0 down in the second set.
While took on Leverton again and pushed his opponent close before losing 4-1, 4-2. Philips and Metyko then returned to court to beat Roskell-Thomas and Cameron-Webb 4-0, 4-2 to seal the victory.
