The Flybe Mini Red tournament had 11 entrants all very keen to play, arriving early and getting warmed up. Players had come from clubs in Exeter, Teignmouth, Tavistock and Ipplepen as well as Torquay to compete. Lots of people arrived to watch; parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties as well as siblings making it a very lively atmosphere and luckily several of Torquay TC’s older juniors also came along to support and help umpire.
Play got underway promptly at 3pm. Daniel Mountford and the relatively inexperienced Lucas Urquiza from Exeter were on first. This match was very competitive and both players had to be at their best, Dan being the eventual winner 12-10. Six year old newcomer Ashley Morris from Teignmouth started his first match against Torquay’s Romany Hannaford and this also proved to be very close match, Ashley eventually winning 10-8.
The close matches and fun atmosphere continued throughout the event. Other players who had great matches included Mackenzie Tuckwell from Tavistock and Torquay’s Noah Rider. In a home tie, Finn Robinson pushed Rory Medlock all the way, before losing out 11-9. Harry Burcham (Torquay) had some great wins, and narrowly lost out to box winner Daniel Mountford 10-7. Ashley Morris had to get past Jess Mann's (Ipplepen) stiff opposition winning 12-10 before ending up winner of box 2, not bad for his first tournament!
The tournament ended with a fun game, children and parents all joining in (approx 30 people) and, following on in his sons footsteps, Adrian Mountford was the eventual winner.
Organiser Tracy Brown said, "Well done to father and son and everyone else who entered, played, supported and helped out to make this a really enjoyable day!"
