Over 65 men's fate in other hands!

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

The over 65 men's final match of the season was against Oxford and a win would mean promotion back to division 1 at the first time of asking.

On Sunday 17 July at Abingdon, on green clay under blue skies but with a gusty breeze, our chaps faced Oxford.

Match one, Stewart Barnes v England player and higher rated John Spratt. Although Stewart remained strong and made his opponent work hard for every point, John was more experienced and more familiar with the surface and used this to his advantage to win the rubber 6-2, 6-1.

It was a similar story for Tony Counter in the second singles rubber, finding it hard going on the difficult surface and losing 2-6, 1-6.

In their doubles Phil Bastin and Bernard Mowle came up against another experienced pair and despite some close games were unable to convert and lost 2-6, 2-6. Their second doubles went much the same way and resulted in a 3-6, 4-6 loss.

Stewart and Tony also had some close games but were unable to match their opponent's consistency and went down 2-6, 3-6.

So a loss in the final match means that with 3 home wins and 2 away losses, promotion to Division 1 depends on who comes out on top between Oxford and South Wales!
