Hopeful of achieving promotion back to Division 1, the over 70s team found this hope filtering away as the summer progressed and more and more members were unable to play.
David Evans, acting captain, said, " In the circumstances we did extremely well to beat local rivals Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset, all by 3 rubbers to 1 though often only by surviving last set championship tie-breaks! Sadly, for the decisive match against Hampshire, our strongest opponents, we lost a further 3 players and were forced to concede the match, leaving us in second place in the division."
The number 1 pairing of David Evans and Derek Shephard had an up and down season, battling long and hard in each match but eventually going down in a deciding championship tie-break. The stars of the team were the scratch pairing of Mel Kirby and Les Harries, playing at number 2. They won all their rubbers, in each match frustrating and outlasting the opposition and winning tight deciders.
The squad is looking forward to next season when the return of strong players should make them even more competitive. Division 1 beckons!
