With both schools looking for a record 5th win, Radipole Primary and St Andrews doubled their chances by each bringing along 2 teams to the Wey Valley Tennis Centre on Fathers’ Day for the 11th Pengilly Cup. They were faced with stiff competition from first-timers Bridport Primary as well as teams from St Nicholas, St Johns and Southill.
This annual competition, sponsored by Pengillys Solicitors, for school Years 3 and below is played on mini courts and includes both singles and doubles matches as well as agility skills, beat the coach and a tennis quiz. Newcomers to the game compete alongside those with more experience to gain points for their school team.
After some close fought matches in the round robin boxes, the semi-final line-up was Bridport Primary v St Nicholas and St Andrews v Radipole. Bridport and St Andrews came through to what was always going to be a close final. It was 1-1 after the doubles, then 2-2 after the top singles before St Andrews claimed the last 2 games to run out 4-2 winners and take the Pengilly Cup for a record 5th time.
Other prizes went to Ben Buckland from St Johns for his efforts on the agility circuit and to Arthur Holmes from St Andrews who impressed the coaches with his determination.
John Walkington of Pengillys was on hand to watch the action and present prizes and certificates to all players.
Junior coordinator, Chris Penny, was pleased with the day’s tennis and grateful for the support from Weymouth Tennis club’s coaches, parents and older juniors who helped out on court. “We would like to thank Pengillys Solicitors for their ongoing sponsorship which enables the competition to take place and for coming along to present the prizes. It was great to see all the children having fun on the tennis court, learning new skills and competing as a team. I think they were quite tired at the end after 4 hours of non-stop activity!”
