Piers Reaches Semis

Friday, March 15, 2013

Dorset’s Piers Farhang showed a glimpse of his potential after reaching the semi-finals of the Under 16 Boys Winter National Tour Finals at the National Tennis Centre in London. Playing as the fourth seed, Farhang was drawn in the same half of the tournament as the number two seed Enrique Vidal, who he would potentially meet in the last four.

However, up first for Farhang was Kent’s Thomas Wright in the opening round. A close first set went the way of Farhang 6-4, as did the second set 6-2, meaning Piers was through to the quarter finals.

The Dorset player’s next opponent was Sussex’s Peter Molloy who had played out a long three-setter in his first round match. Piers was able to take control of the match early on with a break and from then on the result never looked in doubt. He stormed to a 6-1, 6-2 victory which took him through to the semi-finals.

The 2nd seed had lost in the quarter-finals and his conqueror Joe Woolley, Lincolnshire, would be Farhang’s opponent in the last four. A close encounter followed, with both sets being won on a single break, unfortunately for the Dorset player, his opponent was the one securing the breaks. Piers was narrowly beaten 7-5, 6-4, but can take solace in the fact that he was defeated by the eventual tournament champion.

Farhang is ranked second in the county’s under 16s and under 18s age group and is consistently reaching the last four of the National Tour Finals events, it surely won’t be long before he is challenging for these titles.
