Matthew Wins Murray's Trophy!

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Matthew Hollingworth from Saltburn clinched the same trophy that Andy Murray won in 1997.

The 11 year old, who is coached by Libby Fletcher at Tennis World, Middlesbrough won through some tough competition to claim the title in his respective age group at the Doncaster Spring Junior Open 2012!

Leading up to the semi finals Matthew competed well and went through both matches in two sets.  However the semi final was where he had to dig deep to battle in a three setter against Ying Hou from Brough, North Humberside.  Hollingworth took the first set (5-4) on a tiebreak (7-2) and then lost the second 3-5.  With the third set being a match tiebreak first to ten points everything was to play for to gain a place in the final.  With experience and positive play Matthew took the tie break 10-6, which saw him reach the final of the Grade 3 Regional event.

Following his battle in the semi final the 11 year old was up against Vishnu Panikkar who is rated the same as Matthew but a year older.  The Surrey player made Matthew work for every point and forced both sets to a tiebreak.  However Matthew once again showed his fighting spirit and experience by taking both tiebreaks and claiming the prestigious title!

Matthew is pictured with his proud Grandad Alan Richardson who said,

"Matthew is so excited about his win at Doncaster.  To have won a trophy that Andy Murray won before he went on to compete on the professional tour is really inspiring.  We hope this will keep Matthew working hard and being determined to keep improving!"

Matthew's results can be found here and we wish him luck with up coming events!
