Reid Seals Fourth North East Title

Monday, March 04, 2013

World No. 8 Gordon Reid clinched his fourth North East Wheelchair Tennis Tournament title on Thursday as Britain's second NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour event of 2013 drew to a close in Sunderland with British players completing a clean sweep of all the titles.

After Reid's 15 year old countryman, Alfie Hewett, having reached his first ITF 2 Series final, the world No. 1 ranked junior and fourth seed found the going tough against top seed and defending champion Reid, who went on to record a 6-0, 6-1 victory to add to his previous North East titles in 2008, 2009 and 2012.

Top seeds Hewett and Reid beat second seeds Marc McCarroll and Kevin Simpson 6-0, 6-1 in the all-British final, a result that saw Hewett claim his first ITF 2 Series doubles title.

Thursday's victories for Reid and Hewett followed Jordanne Whiley and Jamie Burdekin's victories in Wednesday's women's singles and quad singles finals.

Whiley also partnered Lauren Jones to win the women's doubles, while the British success was completed by Antony Cotterill and Adam Field, who won the quad doubles earlier in the week.
