All eyes were on Sunderland Tennis Centre as it played host to the prestigious 12&Under Tennis Europe Winter Cup Finals.
The finals were made up of 8 teams from all over Europe, including: Belarus, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Russia and Ukraine. The teams had battled through tough qualification rounds all over Europe.
With the teams made up of the best Under 12s, we were in for a good show!
The first day of play saw wins for Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain and Italy, these teams went on to the Semi Finals. But that wasn’t the end for the losing teams as they went on to play in a consolation draw.
Day 2 saw a very tough Semi Final for Great Britain, who battled against Italy and managed a 2-1 win to put them in to the final. The other Semi Final was a little more one sided as Ukraine beat Russia 3-0 to comfortably cement their place in the final. Italy and Russia went on to play in the 3rd/4th play off.
However, after a brilliant two days from Great Britain, it wasn’t to be in the final. Ukraine continued their amazing form and took a 3-0 win against the home team.
Russia clinched third place as they beat Italy 2-1.
Over the three days the Sunderland spectators were treated to some amazing tennis by the best up and coming talent from around Europe.
