The 32nd Hale Gardens tournament started with the mini tennis on Sunday.
The Mini Red players came in the morning and although there were only 4 of them the results were very close with 3 of the players winning two of their three matches so the results were calculated on a percentage of points won.
The Winner was Patrick Oatley (Hampshire, Burley) and the Runner up was Owen Martel (Hampshire, Southampton).
In the afternoon there were 16 players in the Mini Orange competition. They played in 4 boxes of 4 and then 1st and 2nd went through to an elimination competition and 3rd and 4th went through to a consolation. Out of the 40 matches played no less than 16 went to 3 sets and the scores in the sets were close as well. The final was a repeat of last year’s Mini Red final but this year the result was reversed. The winner was Hannah Smith from Reading and she beat George Russell from Lymington 7-4,7-6. In the 3rd and 4th playoff Alfie Reynolds from Southsea beat Samuel Blackwell from Ropley 7-4,7-2
Overall the day was a success, with a lot a matches played. Zoë Bambridge, Hampshire and IOW Tennis Development Manager said “It was great to see so many players enjoying being out on the courts competing, there was great attitude across the courts with a strong sense of competitiveness in each match, well done to all of the players.”
