Ladies’ Winter County Cup – 24th – 26th November 2017

The Ladies were competing in Division 4a in Newport, Wales, as we sadly got relegated last year.

The team was:  Esther Adeshina, Freya Davies, Debbie Hale, Magda Kornijczuk, Oana Manole, Aisling McGrane, Lorelei Sanderson, Hannah Smith

Captain Sue Espley

The other counties in the Division were:  Buckinghamshire, Avon and Devon

Day 1 vs Buckinghamshire

The singles players were: Esther, Freya, Aisling, Hannah, Lorelei, Oana

We got our weekend off to a great start winning 5 of the 6 singles matches and Oana only narrowly lost hers 7-5 in the 3rd set.

The doubles pairs were:  Esther and Hannah, Debbie and Freya, Aisling and Oana

Oana and Aisling and Debbie and Freya both won their matches in two sets.

Our end of day result 7-2 victory.

Day 2 vs Devon

The team stayed the same today so the singles players were: Esther, Freya, Aisling, Hannah, Lorelei, Oana

The Devon team really put up a good fight, but we got two wins from Freya and Aisling in the singles. Lorelei narrowly lost in a 3 hour battle!

We were 4-2 down going into the doubles.

The doubles pairs were: Esther and Hannah, Debbie and Freya, Aisling and Oana

The team very nearly pulled off an overall win, Debbie and Freya and Aisling and Oana won both their matches, and Esther and Hannah narrowly lost against a very tough pair playing fantastic doubles taking their opponents to a third set tie break.

End of day result 5-4 to Devon

Day 3 vs Avon

In theory any County could win the group today as each county was on 1 win each. However realistically it as between Avon and Hampshire as we had more rubbers than Devon and Berkshire.

The singles players were: Esther, Freya, Aisling, Lorelei, Debbie, Magda

The first 3 matches didn’t quite go our way despite Magda and Lorelei having long three set matches. From then on our fortunes changed and we won the remaining 3 matches taking us to 3-3 going into the doubles.

The doubles pairs were: Esther and Aisling, Debbie and Freya, Lorelei and Oana

A fantastic team effort by everybody meant that all 3 doubles pairs won their matches which gave us a 6-3 victory and winners of the division.

The 2nd place went to Buckinghamshire, 3rd to Avon and Devon got relegated.

Special mention must go to Freya who won all of her 6 matches.  It was a pleasure to captain this team all of whom contributed fully to the success of our weekend.
