Batchwood Tennis Academy boasted 3 of the 16 players in the boys 10&U Nike Winter National Tour Finals at the weekend. Competing at the prestigious invitation only event at the National Tennis Centre Roehampton were Herts boys Oliver Tarvet and Andre Raath and Bedfordshire’s Callum Cawsey. Andre produced some excellent performances with a vastly improved heavy forehand and serve to finish 6th nationally. Callum finished a creditable 14th in his first tour finals appearance.
Playing aggressive tennis Oliver Tarvet (seeded 2) made it through the final where he defeated fourth seed Shropshire boy Roan Jones 4-2, 4-0. With the match delicately poised at 2-2 in the first set the St Albans player survived four game points before converting a break point of his own to take the fifth game. Once in front he held his nerve well and produced some sensational tennis to break twice more in the second set to secure his first National Championship title.
Head Coach Jon Meredith commented, “It was a pleasure to see the three Batchwood boys perform so well at the weekend. The standard of the tennis was very high and it was like watching mini professionals – they are so technically sound and aggressive. I was thrilled to see Oliver win the event in the fashion he did. The sky’s the limit for our current crop of 10 year old boys if they keep working hard and taking on board the coaching advice they are benefiting from.”
