The first of two Quorn Family Tennis Cup Festival Days took place at Manchester’s Aegon Trophy at the Northern Lawn Tennis Club on 29th May.
Nineteen pairs took part in finals event in Manchester, all of whom had earned their place at the Festival Day by winning their club-level Quorn Family Tennis Cup (QFTC) Competitions.
After being greeted by Richard Joyner, Manchester Aegon Trophy’s Tournament Director, the doubles pairings battled it out in the hope of being crowned North West QFTC Champions.
After two hours of matches, Ormskirk Tennis Club’s Sam Merriman (aged 10) and his dad Chris Merriman were declared Quorn Family Tennis Cup’s North West winners. The triumphant pair were presented with their trophy and certificate by Manchester MP Jeff Smith and LTA President Cathie Sabin OBE.
Having decided the QFTC Competition winners, the excitement did not stop there. With the iconic Davis Cup Trophy on showcase at Manchester’s Aegon Trophy, all of the competitors were given the opportunity to see it up close for themselves and, most importantly, take a Trophy selfie!
The competitors were then treated to a meet-and-greet, Q&A and autograph session with ATP star - and Manchester Aegon Trophy defending champion – Sam Groth. Last year Groth reached round three of Wimbledon (before being knocked out by Federer on Centre Court) so had lots of exciting stories and insights to share with the group.
Finally, to top off the fun-filled day, the winners were invited back as a family to sit courtside to watch the Manchester Aegon Trophy final. QFTC’s 2016 Junior winner Sam Merriman was given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to toss the coin before the Men’s Final, which saw Dustin Brown take on (and eventually beat) Hsun Lu.
