The 2012 Olympics were memorable for a lot of gold, silver & bronze reasons for Great Britain. But for Jane Reid they were the inspiration for her taking up tennis and eventually becoming the Chairperson of the Manchester City Tennis Club, based in Wythenshawe Park.
In summer 2012, Manchester City Council’s sport development team hosted a fun tennis competition in Wythenshawe Park – and, much to her own surprise, Jane Reid emerged the victor! This was the catalyst for her joining Manchester City Tennis Club, based at Wythenshawe Park, and becoming more involved in the sport.
‘I wish I had started playing tennis aged 5 like many adult players. I didn’t actually take up tennis until I was in my 40’s!’ said Jane. ‘But, as my experience proves, it really doesn’t matter what age you are!’
For Jane, being outdoors and forming new friendships characterise her tennis club experience: ‘It is a very friendly club with social tennis for all abilities 3 times a week and teams competing in the Manchester leagues. I have even been on a tennis holiday with some of the other ladies from the club’.
As Chairperson of Manchester City Tennis Club, Jane’s ambition is to attract more people to the club. The club currently makes use of 3 of Wythenshawe Park’s 6 outdoor floodlit courts. New club members are always welcome, with membership fees just £20 per year. Group coaching is also available throughout the week with Head Coach Alex on hand for those looking to improve their game.
‘All ages and levels are welcome at Manchester City Tennis Club and individual attention is available to those who would like to improve – there is no need to fear being outhit or surpassed by another player!’ said Jane.
