The first entries for the inaugural Charnwood Sports Awards have been submitted – but there is still plenty of time to send in nominations.
A total of 29 entries have been sent in for the Charnwood Borough Council-run Awards, which aim to celebrate the sporting success of individuals and teams. They are, however, not just about recognising those people who actively compete in a variety of sports. The Awards also look to honour the dedicated volunteers who give up their spare time to coach teams or individuals and those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to help a club run smoothly.
Some of the entries received so far have come from a number of sports, including football, rugby union, cricket, athletics, badminton, netball, orienteering, boxing, tae kwon do, canoeing and bowls. Cllr Peter Lewis, Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture, said: “There’s so much talent out there – but don’t just take it for granted. These Awards are about people who simply inspire. Say thank you by nominating your local stars for an award.”
There are 13 categories and all the nominees must live, or represent a club, in the Borough of Charnwood. Nominations need to be submitted by 5pm on Friday, September 11 and those shortlisted in each category from all the entries will be invited to a presentation night on Thursday, October 22 at Loughborough Town Hall when the winners will be announced.
Entries can be submitted for the following categories: Junior Sportsperson of the Year; Junior Volunteer of the Year; Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year; Junior Team of the Year; Senior Sportsperson of the Year; Volunteer of the Year; Disabled Sportsperson of the Year; Senior Team of the Year; Coach of the Year; Club of the Year; Contribution to School Sport; Loughborough University Student Award; Outstanding Contribution to Sport.
The 2009 Awards focus on achievements from September 2008 to the closing date, with the exception of the Contribution to School Sport and the Outstanding Contribution to Sport categories, which can be over a longer period of time.
