Stoney Stanton Tennis Club successfully staged the 2010 Senior Club Championships Finals on Saturday 18th September despite some heavy rain at times. 38 club members entered one of the five events in the Club’s 48th Annual Championships which saw matches start back in July.
The singles events started the days play and saw the 2009 defeated finalist Pete Law battle through against 18 year old Kieran Groom in an exciting 2 ½ hour match winning the Men’s singles event 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. In the ladies singles final, Dianne Stevens retained her title defeating Marianne Millington 6-3, 6-3 in the first of her three finals. In the Men’s singles consolation event, 17 year old Sam Eaton having won the first set 6-1 came from 2-5 down to win the second set 7-5 against fellow 17 year old Matt Whawell.
Three doubles events followed; Marianne Millington pairing up with Dianne Stevens, her opponent in the singles final, and Alison Wilkinson partnering Fiona Pearce. This was a very close match with Marianne and Dianne winning a tight first set 7-5. Alison and Fiona won the next set 6-4 and then went on to win the final set 6-1. Last year’s winners Chris Stratford and Pete Law were too strong for Dan Cosgrove and Nigel Butler defeating them 6-1, 6-2 in the Men’s doubles final. The Men’s doubles consolation event was contested between father and son pairing Jon and Matt O’Shea and Matt Whawell who played with Henry Cox. Matt and Henry following a close 6-3 win in the first set went on to win the second set 6-0.
The finals day finished with the Mixed doubles event where Nigel Butler and Alison Wilkinson overcame Dan Cosgrove and Marianne Millington in two close sets 6-4, 6-4. This event was umpired by 13 year old Junior Member Jamie Turner.
Presentations to all finalists were made by Club President Bernard Law, followed by drinks and a typical British BBQ which was enjoyed by all.
