Oakham Tennis Club’s Ladies 1sts team thrashed Ashby Castle 8-0.

Both pairs lost only five games each in their matches.

Debbie Powell and Celine Veniat began strongly against the visitors’ 2nds and didn’t let up throughout.

They then played the Ashby 1sts who put up more resistance but couldn’t find a way through the stout Rutland attack.

Jane Wood and Carolyn Davies worked well against the visitors’ 1sts and eventually broke down their defences to win four and one. Their second rubber was less stressful and they ran out worthy winners.

The Ladies 2nds went to Melton for their local derby which is usually a close affair.

Skipper Joan Gilliver, playing with Sarah Chinnery, worked very well in their first rubber against the home side 1sts, coming very close to upsetting them. Their 4-6, 4-6 sets didn’t reflect the real narrowness of the game.

They found the second Melton pair much more resilient but kept fighting to the bitter end.

Katy Bryant and Laura Reekie worked well together, playing steady tennis with great depth. They ran through their first opposing pair 6-0, 6-3 which surprised them as it was their first match together. They found the 1sts sharper but kept up the pressure to get a draw 4-6, 6-3.

The final score was to Melton. Next match away.
