Zara Jurenko

Tennis ace Zara Jurenko just missed out on a medal at the INAS Global Games in Italy.

The 24-year-old from Kirby Muxloe went closest to success in the mixed doubles which is a qualifying event for next year's Paralympics.

Jurenko, partnered by Peter Millar, won through to a play-off for a bronze medal against an Australian pair and had a match point before a bizarre incident turned the course of the contest.

The female player for Australia hit a ball that would have landed long and given Jurenko and Millar a place on the podium.

But, before the ball bounced it hit Millar, therefore giving the point to the Australian duo, who went on to clinch the match and the bronze medal in a tie-break.

Tom Styles, of Melton Mowbray, was also involved in the action, with his playing partner, Alistair Daniels.

They finished third in their men's doubles round-robin group, narrowly missing out on qualification for the knockout semi-finals.

Steve Humphries, the Leicester City Council officer said "Once again, Leicestershire sport can be very proud of the outstanding efforts and never-give-up attitude of the athletes."
