Who are the oldest sports people in Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland?

Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport is set to celebrate our oldest athletes in style!

In 2010 Leicester-Shire & Rutland Sport celebrated the lifelong participation of over 50 local active older people at the inaugural Oldest Athlete Celebration. In this Olympic year the search is on for 2012’s inspirational oldest athletes.

National Governing Bodies of Sport such as England Netball along with physical activity projects including Active Together aim to identify the oldest sports people from across Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland.

Participants will be recognised in 6 award categories;

  • Athlete Award (Performance)
  • Physical Activity Award (Participation)
  • Volunteer Award
  • Outstanding/ Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Oldest Athlete Award
  • Judge’s Panel Special Award

 In addition to identifying athletes from National Governing Bodies and physical activity programmes, Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport want to throw this open to the public. Do you believe yourself to be, or do you know of someone who could be the oldest athlete or participant in a particular sport or activity?

Andy Reed, Chairman of Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sport said, “This is a fantastic opportunity for the lifetime achievements of our long standing participants to be celebrated in what will truly be a day to remember. We hope this will also inspire others throughout our local communities to enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits that result from regular participation in sport and physical activity.”

In 2010 Alan Mellett was aged 76 at the time and was winner of the Athlete Award. Alan headed the British ranking lists for 2010 men aged 75 to 79 for the 100 and 200m and ranked third All Time for age group 200m.

The 2012 event is supported by imago who will host the Oldest Athlete Celebration at The Link on 1st October. imago Chief Executive, Kay England said, “imago is proud to support the ‘2012 Oldest Athlete Celebration Event’. imago is part of the Official Preparation Camp for Team GB so believes in supporting all levels of sporting achievement – from grass roots level through our successful relationship with Youth Sport Trust to the professionals such as the RFL, RFU and the ECB who often use imago venues.”

“It’s great to see that representatives from Leicestershire’s sporting alumni are still being recognised for their achievements and we hope to put on a fantastic event for them. This occasion adds to our ever growing list of events we offer, with a number of weddings, Christmas parties and Bed and breakfast bookings being placed with us so far this year.”
