LLYP Awards 2015

A personal message from the Lord-Lieutenant, Lady Gretton

Thank you for taking a few moments to consider my Award for Young People.

One of the joys of being Lord-Lieutenant is having the opportunity of meeting many young people and seeing some truly remarkable examples of young people volunteering and giving their time to the local community.

I feel that much of this achievement goes unnoticed by the wider community, when all too often we hear of examples that portray young people in a negative light. It was in part for this reason that I wanted to do what I could to raise awareness of the positive contributions made by young people.

This was my motivation for establishing my own award scheme across the City and County, and which is now in its ninth year. I am delighted with the way my award has helped to raise the profile of young people’s achievements over that time and we have been able to celebrate and reward some truly inspirational young people.

The foundation for this success is the nominations we receive from people who are able to identify deserving young people, and are prepared to make that special effort to spread this message and submit the vital nomination form. Full details are on my website www.leics.gov.uk/llawards

This year I am seeking nominations in five categories and am appealing to you to help me to find a:

  • Young Braveheart;
  • Young Volunteer;
  • Young Most Improved Sports Person;
  • Young Artist.

And, over the next four years, my Award will carry a special award for a young person who helps to commemorate the First World War. This year I am looking for young people to convey the mood of the time, or the horror of trench warfare, through the medium of poetry. This is the fifth category:

  • Young Poet

The young finalists will receive an invitation to our special Awards evening and Dinner and will receive prizes to the value of £500. I know from previous years that the young people who join me with their families, carers and friends have a wonderful and memorable evening, and I hope that we can help to make that come true for more young people this year.

Together we can celebrate and honour the fantastic young people of our city and county.
