ANDY MURRAY'S FORMER COACH PRESENTS COUNTY TENNIS AWARDS

The county's tennis players have come together from all points of the local compass to celebrate another year of tennis success. The man who guided Andy Murray to his first two grand slam finals and the world no 2 position, Miles Maclagan, was this year's guest of honour. The popular annual event, attended by a capacity audience, was once again staged at Leicester Tigers's conferencing suite. Also on hand to help with the ceremony were Leicester's most famous tennis son, Mark Cox, former British No1 and world no 13 in his playing days. Cox is now county tennis president. Tennis Leicestershire chairman, John Chapman and vice president , Mike Harrison, were once again comperes for an evening of tennis entertainment and celebration.

Leicestershire and Rutland have one of the highest competitive participation rates of anywhere in Britain with no fewer than 73 adult league and cup competitions organised in summer and winter. Some events have trophies dating back to just after the First World War.

Lifting the flagship summer premier division titles were Carisbrooke's men's and Loughborough Town's ladies' teams. Meanwhile after a 30 year gap, the mixed doubles team from Roundhill took the 'Leicester Mercury Cup' after the closest final in the knock-out competition's 95 year history.

The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club received a national accolade being presented with The 'GB Veterans' Club of The Year' trophy having enjoyed unparalleled success at internatinal, national and local level.

Lancaster school's boys under 15s from Knighton were 'Team of the Year'.

Mark Cox himself received 'The Anthony Hunting Memorial Cup' for his services to national, county and club tennis.

The individual award winners were Barnaby Thorold of Loughborough (Junior boy and Greenshires Junior Cup winner), Christina Pozersksi of Market Harborough (Junior Girl), Becky Scrivins of Loughborough (Senior lady player), Shirley Fox of the Leicestershire club (Veteran player of the year), Bill Kittle of Stoney Stanton (volunteer), James Shaw of Loughborough (Special Disability) Bruce Tarran of Leicestershire and Caroline Wilkinson of Loughborough shared the 'Coach of the Year' award and Joyce Wright received the Lifetime Achievement award.
