Newcastle teacher aims to inspire a generation

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Kerry Smith was born in Bath and is now a teacher at The Royal Grammar School in Newcastle.  Kerry is also a keen player herself and a Level 2 Tennis Assistant Coach and her aim is to teach others a positive experience of the game through the Tennis For Kids programme.

Smith, who competes for the Northumberland Club Ladies 1st team plays with a right handed double handed backhand, believes the Tennis For Kids Programme is a fantastic initiative to give young players the chance to enjoy free coaching and receive a free racket to continue playing the sport.

Enthusiasm and energy is the key to coaching the 10 children who will never have played tennis before. Smith aims to retain the 10 players within the tennis programme at Jesmond Lawn Tennis Club once the sessions have finished and being part of something new and exciting will help her achieve this.

Kerry aims to “show the 10 kids I coach how much fun tennis can be so they want to play more.”

Smith enjoys most things competitive and has always looked up to Justine Henin because of her awesome backhand, however admires everything Andy Murray has achieved. Her favourite tournament to watch is Wimbledon because ‘it is the greatest tournament in the world’ and for three years organised the official Wimbledon towels at the Championships.

Kerry will run three sessions for six weeks starting; Friday 6th May 17:00, Sunday 8th May 08.30 and Sunday 8th May 10.00. For more information please visit https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/tennisforkids.
