Two brothers from Somerset have enjoyed success at tournaments both at home and abroad during the early part of this summer. Toby and James Mitchell who started tennis at Avenue TC in Burnham before progressing to the international high performance centre in Bath via Taunton, have a hectic schedule of events all year round but have achieved notable success in recent weeks.
Elder brother Toby, aged 16, has reached the singles quarter finals of an U18 International Tennis Federation (ITF) event in Edmonton Canada as well as reaching the doubles finals at the same event and at the ITF event in Bermuda the week before with partner Samm Butler from Hampshire.
Toby then travelled to Vancouver and has reached the Final of the U18 Canadian Word Ranking ITF event Beating a top 200 player from USA Richard Nunzio on route. He also got to the semi final of the doubles at the same event. Toby has also reached the Quarter Final of another Canadian event in Winnipeg this week, before he travels to Ireland to compete in another ITF event in Dublin.

Whilst Toby has been globe trotting, younger brother James has achieved success on the domestic front. James reached the final of the U14 event at a Grade 3 event in Glasgow, beating some of Scotland's finest players on route to losing in a tight final. James also reached the semi finals of the U16’s at the same tournament. James is off to compete at the National Finals of the Road to Wimbledon Tournament, played at Wimbledon from the 15th – 20th August 2011 after qualifying through by winning the county event played at Taunton in June.
Local Tennis Development Manager James Deem said “this is a great success for Toby and James, its great to have players of their standard come through from Somerset and we wish them both much success in their remaining events this summer”.
