Andrew Bettles Enjoys Emphatic Victory

The 16-year-old ‘under-age’ Somerset county star was in excellent form to beat Aaron Banasik (GBR) 6-0, 6-1 and Gent Rexha (GRB) 6-2, 6-3 before knocking out the number five seed Sterland Marcovic (GBR) 6-1, 6-1.

Seeded to reach the last eight, Bettles improved on those expectations to beat Robin Goodman (GBR) 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals where his win over Eamon Soulsby 6-2, 7-5 set up the victory over Turbervill.

The week before, Bettles had reached the semi-finals of this ITF series and was also a semi-finalist recently at the ITF junior event in Valencia.  His stunning run of form has seen him rise from 649 in the world rankings to around 300 when the latest list is issued.

With a victory over Tennis Europe under 16 leader Mate Pavic (Spain) already under his belt, it promises to be an exciting summer season for Andrew Bettles who has now flown to Belguim to compete in the World Schools’ Tennis Championships.

A Taunton-dominated Somerset girls’ team will competes at this weekend’s LTA 14 and under County Cup at Sutton (Surrey) where they play Group 6a rivals Bedfordshire, Berkshire and the Channel islands over three days. 

The boys’ are in action in Group 3a at Swindon and meet Avon, Hampshire & IOW and Sussex.  The team includes Henry Hall, runner-up in the recent Porsche Nottingham Junior Open 12 and under singles.
