The boys’ team from Millfield School had to settle for a runners-up finish after being beaten by tournament powerhouses Reeds School in the final of the Aegon Team Tennis School Finals at Graves Tennis Centre, Sheffield.
Millfield boys had thrashed Wilmslow High School 10-0 in the semi-finals and where in great form heading into the final where they faced the top seeds. A tough match followed though as they struggled to keep up with their opponents.
Simon Pritchard went down 6-4, 6-4 to Jamie Malik in a close match, Giles Hussey pushed Josef Dodridge hard but was beaten 7-5, 6-4, Luke Hammond fought bravely before being beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Shamael Chaundry and in the other singles match, Max Darrington was swept aside by Tom Colautti 6-0, 6-2 giving Reeds an unassailable 8-0 lead.
Millfield can take heart in the fact that Reeds have now won the title seven years in a row and have not lost a match in the finals for the last three years, showing that they are undoubtedly deserving of their top seed status at the competition.
The girls’ team from Millfield were also in action as the fourth seeds at the finals. They were beaten 8-4 in the semi-finals by eventual winners Queenswood School. After being beaten 8-4 by third seeds Cheam High School in the 3rd/4th placed playoff, the team had to settle for a fourth place finish. The Millfield girls’ team included; Hayley Marshall, Jemima Potter, Caroline Nielsen, India Saunders and Eva Hurst.
