Over 100 people attended the open day at Frome Selwood Tennis Club on Sunday 14th June, where free tennis was enjoyed all day. The event was part of the Great British Tennis Weekend initiative. Visitors enjoyed tennis coaching for juniors, free play for adults and a competition for the title of Frome’s Fastest Serve was fought out. The serve had to be legal – that is it had to clear the net and fall in the correct court quadrant. Each entrant was allowed three serves.
The fastest adult serve was Stuart Lines at 74 mph and the fastest junior serve was Jacob Smalley at 44 mph - just a little way still to go to beat the fastest ever recorded serve of 163.7 mph recorded by Samuel Groth of the United States!.
‘It was a wonderful day and we hope to see many of the visitors coming back to join the club’ said Club Chairperson, John Price. ‘Very soon there will be three further brand new courts on site that will be open to both the public and club members, so tennis in Frome is really on an upward curve’.
Frome Selwood Tennis Club has also just been awarded LTA accreditation as a Tennismark Club. Although one of the smaller clubs in Somerset they are only the second club to achieve this high standard.
The club is open to new members and group coaching for juniors and adults is available. Full details can be found at www.frometennis.net or contact Club Coach Chris Matthews on 07838 387482.
