Frome Selwood Tennis Club announced today that 3 new tennis courts are to be built in Victoria Park to replace the existing 3 derelict courts. As part of the package of work, the old courts are to be removed and the area returned to grass, with some of the material from the old courts being re-cycled and used for the foundation of the new courts. The Club is working in partnership with Frome Town Council who placed the order with the Newbury company last Wednesday.
‘This is great news,’ said Club Chair, John Price, ‘the Club has been working in partnership with the Town Council for two and a half years to raise the money for the courts,’ and he thanked the grant bodies for their support. These include: Sport England, the LTA, Mendip District Council and Frome Community Lottery. He also expressed thanks to club members and townspeople for sponsoring their square of court and helping to raise the sum required – their names are permanently recorded on the club website.
Work on the courts will start in early December and should be completed in time for the start of the tennis season in April. The courts will be eventually finished in two tone green acrylic paint, although the courts will be initially equipped with temporary lines for the first few weeks to get the courts into use, as the final paint has to be applied during warm weather.
The courts will be operated and maintained by the tennis club on behalf of the town council and will be available for the general public on a pay and play basis with booking and payment being made on-line at the town council offices and also at the Park Café on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The club will also use them on some evenings in the summer months for matches.
Frome Selwood Tennis Club is a Community Amateur Sports Club that is affiliated to the LTA. Its mission statement is to provide the facilities and opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to enjoy and develop their tennis and to socialise in a friendly and welcoming environment.
