Congratulations to Taunton Tennis Club’s Women’s 35’s team, recently crowned Champions at the European Women’s 35’s Club Championships held at La Manga in Spain where they represented Great Britain. The team was captained by Kerry Quirk (Taunton Tennis Club Manager) who played doubles with Elizabeth Deem. The singles players were Kate Brown and Claire Raddan.
The week long tournament consisted of 2 singles matches and 1 doubles match each day. Their exciting journey to victory began by beating Sweden, The Netherlands and Belgium in the group stage of the competition without dropping a set in singles or doubles. They then competed in a tight semi-final against another team from Great Britain where after the singles matches the fixture was tied at 1-1, with Kerry and Elizabeth then clinching the deciding doubles match after a tense second set to give the overall win and a place in the finals. The final was against another Netherlands team and was very closely fought with both Claire and Kate doing incredibly well to come through thrilling 3 set singles matches.
The team had a fantastic time in Spain with a great team spirit and have been invited to compete in next year’s competition as defending champions.
