The Yeovil Junior Open held 12th to 14th August, is only in its second year but numbers have increased substantially on last year. The weather, though threatening at times, managed to stay dry over the three days of competition, which was a great relief to the referee and organisers alike.
The Under 16 and Under 14 boys’ events were particularly well subscribed, leading to some exciting and closely fought matches, notably the U14 final between Henry Field and Joseph Blakely. There was also a marathon of a set in the U8 boy’s event between Aidan Ricketts and Alfie Feltham, finally ending at 20-18.
The host club was well represented this year and players achieved success, with the winners of the U8 and U9 events and runner-up in the U10’s being Yeovil TC members.
The tournament was much enjoyed by players and spectators. Referee Malcolm Terry remarked “The happy club atmosphere and the facilities contributed greatly to an enjoyable event.”
Next year’s event will take place over four days to accommodate the larger numbers of entries.
